Մակաբէոս եւ որ ընդ նմա էին յօգնականութենէ Տեառն զօրացեալ, գերեդա՛րձ առնէին քաղաքին եւ տաճարին[220]:

Now Maccabeus and his company, the Lord guiding them, recovered the temple and the city:
10:2
Եւ զբագինսն որ ՛ի մէջ քաղաքին էին, որ յայլազգեացն արարեալ էր, եւ զտեղիս պաշտամանց քակէին[221]:
10:2
But the altars which the heathen had built in the open street, and also the chapels, they pulled down:
10:3
եւ զտաճարն սրբէին, եւ ա՛յլ սեղան շինէին սրբեալ զվէմսն հրով. եւ դարձեալ ՛ի նոցունց հուր առնուին, եւ մատուցանէին զողջակէզսն պատարագաց` յետ երկեամ ժամանակի. ճրագունս եւ խունկս, եւ զդնել զնուէրս հանապազո՛րդս յաճախա՛ց հացին[222]:

And having cleansed the temple they made another altar, and striking stones they took fire out of them, and offered a sacrifice after two years, and set forth incense, and lights, and shewbread:

Եւ զայս իբրեւ արարին, անկեա՛լ տարածեա՛լ ՛ի վերայ երեսաց իւրեանց զՏէր աղաչէին` զի այլ մի՛ կրկնեսցին ՛ի վերայ նոցա նոյն չարիք. այլ թէպէտ եւ երբէք յանցանիցեն ինչ` ՛ի ձեռն ի՛ւր հեզութեամբ խրատել, եւ մի՛ ՛ի ձեռն հայհոյիչ խուժադուժ հեթանոսաց մատնե՛լ զմեզ[223]:

When that was done, they fell flat down, and besought the Lord that they might come no more into such troubles; but if they sinned any more against him, that he himself would chasten them with mercy, and that they might not be delivered unto the blasphemous and barbarous nations:
10:5
Արդ յորում աւուր տաճարն ՛ի ձեռս հեթանոսաց պղծեցաւ` դէ՛պ եղեւ ՛ի նմին աւուր ՛ի նոյն ժամանակի զսրբութիւնն անդրէն նորոգել, ՛ի քսաներորդի հինգերորդի ամսոյն որ անուանեալ կոչի Քասղեւ[224]:

Now upon the same day that the strangers profaned the temple, on the very same day it was cleansed again, even the five and twentieth day of the same month, which is Casleu:

ցնծութեամբ եւ ուրախութեամբ առնել զտօն աւուրցն զութ օր, ըստ բանի աւուրցն տաղաւարահարաց: Զի յո՛ւշ լիցի նոցա` որպէս յառաջ զտօնս տաղաւարահարացն ՛ի լերինս պաշտէին` յայրս եւ ՛ի քարածերպս, զօրէն երէոց խոտաճարակ շրջել[225]:
10:6
And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the tabernacles, remembering that not long afore they had held the feast of the tabernacles, when as they wandered in the mountains and dens like beasts:

Վասն այսորիկ ոստս առեալ գեղեցիկս ՛ի թա՛ւ ծառոց, եւ ոստս արմաւու` ա՛յնմիկ որ աջողեաց նոցա սրբել զիւր տեղին[226]:

Therefore they bare branches, and fair boughs, and palms also, and sang psalms unto him that had given them good success in cleansing his place:
10:8
Հրամա՛ն տուաք ածել զաւուրս զայս ՛ի տօն տարեկանաց բարեկենդանութեան ցնծութեամբ եւ ուրախութեամբ` ՛ի հասարակաց համարուէ ազգին Եբրայեցւոց` ածե՛լ զայս տօն տարեկանաց ՛ի կարգի աւուրց իւրոց[227]:

They ordained also by a common statute and decree, That every year those days should be kept of the whole nation of the Jews:
10:9
Այլ վասն Անտիոքայ Երեւեալն անուանելոյ մահուանն` ա՛յսչափ բանք[228]:

And this was the end of Antiochus, called Epiphanes:

Բայց վասն Հօրամոյն Անտիոքայ անօրէն զաւակի, ցուցցո՛ւք համառօտ որ ինչ անցք ընդ քաղաքսն անցանէին:

Now will we declare the acts of Antiochus Eupator, who was the son of this wicked man, gathering briefly the calamities of the wars:

Իբրեւ ա՛ռ թա՛գ Անտիոքոս, կացոյց ՛ի վերայ իրացն արքունի կողմանցն Ստորին Ասորւոց եւ Տաճկաստանի զԼիւսիաս:

So when he was come to the crown, he set one Lysias over the affairs of his realm, and appointed him his chief governor of Celosyria and Phenice:

եւ զՊտղոմէոս` որում բարձրա՛նձնն ասէին. զիրաւունս հաստատո՛ւն պահէր առ Եբրայեցիս, վասն ուխտիցն եդելոց` եւ իրաւանցն զրկելոց` ջանայր խաղաղութեամբ անցանել[229]:

For Ptolemeus, that was called Macron, choosing rather to do justice unto the Jews for the wrong that had been done unto them, endeavoured to continue peace with them:

Վասն այսորիկ ամբաստան լինէին զնմանէ ընկերքն իւր առ Անտիոքոս. եւ մատնի՛չ կոչէին զնա յայն սակս, զի կողմանքն Կիպրացւոց ՛ի ձե՛ռն էին նորա ՛ի Փիղ՛ովմիտովրայ հրամանէ. թո՛ղ զնա եւ ե՛կն առ Անտիոքոս. նա իբրեւ ո՛չ համբերէր նախատանացն, դե՛ղս ա՛ռ անձամբ իւրով եւ մեռաւ[230]:

Whereupon being accused of the king' s friends before Eupator, and called traitor at every word because he had left Cyprus, that Philometor had committed unto him, and departed to Antiochus Epiphanes, and seeing that he was in no honourable place, he was so discouraged, that he poisoned himself and died:

Գորգիաս զօրավար վայրացն զօրաժողո՛վ լինէր Եդովմայեցւովքն հանդերձ, հասանե՛լ հարկանե՛լ խուզե՛լ զամուր ամուր կողմանսն:

But when Gorgias was governor of the holds, he hired soldiers, and nourished war continually with the Jews:

Ընդելանէին ընդելուզանէին փախուցանել զնոսա յԵրուսաղեմէ, գո՛ւնդ գործէին, մարտի՛ պատրաստէին[231]:

And therewithall the Idumeans, having gotten into their hands the most commodious holds, kept the Jews occupied, and receiving those that were banished from Jerusalem, they went about to nourish war:

Իսկ որ զՄակաբէացւովքն էին` խնդրուածս առ Աստուած առնէին, օգնական ՛ի ձեռն կոչէին. զի ինքեա՛նք կանխեսցեն հարկանել զամուրսն Եդովմայեցւոց:

Then they that were with Maccabeus made supplication, and besought God that he would be their helper; and so they ran with violence upon the strong holds of the Idumeans:

Իբրեւ եկին հասին պատեցին, խո՛ւմբ արարին, առ հասարա՛կ ՛ի վերայ յարձակեցան, զամուրսն փլուցին, հարին կոտորեցին, զոր ՛ի ձե՛ռն առին առ հասարա՛կ սատակեցին[232]:

And assaulting them strongly, they won the holds, and kept off all that fought upon the wall, and slew all that fell into their hands, and killed no fewer than twenty thousand:

Էին ոմանք որ փախստեա՛յ գնացին, եւ եկին ամրացան ՛ի բերդս երկուս ամուրս: Եւ նոքա ընդ իւրեա՛նս ունէին զամենայն կահ մենքենայից, շուրջ պա՛հ եդին, եւ զմենքենայսն առ պարիսպսն կանգնեցին:

And because certain, who were no less than nine thousand, were fled together into two very strong castles, having all manner of things convenient to sustain the siege:

Եւ Մակաբէոս եթող ՛ի վերայ բերդին զՇիմոն, եւ զՅովսէպ, եւ զԶաքէ, եւ որ ընդ նոսա զօրք էին` վասն բերդիցն պաշարման. եւ ինքն գնաց[233]:

Maccabeus left Simon and Joseph, and Zaccheus also, and them that were with him, who were enough to besiege them, and departed himself unto those places which more needed his help:

Իսկ Շիմոնեանք որ զբերդաւն նստէին` ՛ի պատգամս անկանէին, կաշառագնաց լինէին. առնուին յամրականաց անտի եւթն բեւր սատեր կրկին արծաթոյ, եւ թո՛յլ տային նոցա ելանել սփռել յամրոցաց անտի:

Now they that were with Simon, being led with covetousness, were persuaded for money through certain of those that were in the castle, and took seventy thousand drachms, and let some of them escape:

Իբրեւ ա՛զդ եղեւ Մակաբեայ վասն իրացն որ եղեն, ժողովէր զիշխանսն ամենայն, ամբաստա՛ն լինէր, յա՛յտ առնէր` զի արծաթոյ վաճառեցին զեղբարսն, եւ արձակեցին զթշնամիսն:

But when it was told Maccabeus what was done, he called the governors of the people together, and accused those men, that they had sold their brethren for money, and set their enemies free to fight against them:

Զայնոսիկ որ ա՛յնպէս մա՛տն եղեն օրինացն, ածին սատակեցին զնոսա. եւ ինքեանք ՛ի բե՛րդն արշաւեցին[234]:

So he slew those that were found traitors, and immediately took the two castles:
10:23
հասին պատեցին պաշարեցին, զի յաջողումն ՛ի ձեռն նորա լինէր. եւ յայնմ աւուր կոտորեցին աւելի քան զքսան հազար[235]:

And having good success with his weapons in all things he took in hand, he slew in the two holds more than twenty thousand:

Եւ Տիմոթէոս որ յառաջ ՛ի պարտութիւն մատնեցաւ ՛ի ձեռաց Հեբրայեցւոցն. դարձեալ զուարթանայր, դարձեալ զօրաժողով լինէր յօտարակողմն կուսաց. բազում զայրուձի զԱսիացւոցն կուտեալ, ՛ի մտի՛ եդեալ` գա՛յր ՛ի տէգս նիզակաց վարե՛լ ՛ի գերութիւն զերկիրն Հրէաստանի[236]:

Now Timotheus, whom the Jews had overcome before, when he had gathered a great multitude of foreign forces, and horses out of Asia not a few, came as though he would take Jewry by force of arms:
10:25
Իսկ որ զՄակաբայեցւովքն էին` ընդ մերձենա՛լ նոցա ՛ի խնդրուածս պնդէին առ Աստուած. հող ՛ի գլո՛ւխ քրձազգած լինէին[237]:

But when he drew near, they that were with Maccabeus turned themselves to pray unto God, and sprinkled earth upon their heads, and girded their loins with sackcloth:

առաջի սեղանոյն անկեալ զաշտիճանօքն թաւալէին. խնդրէին յայսմ հետէ հա՛շտ լինել ընդ նոսա, վանե՛լ զթշնամիս նոցա. հակառա՛կ կալ ընդ հակառակորդս նոցա. եւ զամենայն աղօթս որպէս օրէնքն հրամայէին` աղաչէին[238]:

And fell down at the foot of the altar, and besought him to be merciful to them, and to be an enemy to their enemies, and an adversary to their adversaries, as the law declareth:
10:27
Իբրեւ զաղօթսն կատարեցին` առ հասարակ ՛ի զէ՛ն դարձան, վառեցան կազմեցան պատրաստեցան, հարո՛ւստ մի ըստ քաղաքն արտաքս ելին. իբրեւ մե՛րձ եղեն ՛ի գունդն թշնամեաց, կարգեցա՛ն կազմեցան օրինօ՛ք ճակատեցան:

So after the prayer they took their weapons, and went on further from the city: and when they drew near to their enemies, they kept by themselves:

Ա՛յն ինչ վարդագո՛յն ծայրակարմիր արեգակն ընդ երկիր ծաւալել կամէր, եւ նոքա կողմանքն երկոքին ընդ միմեանս խառնէին. կիսոցն` օր բարենշան` զուարթութեամբ պատրաստեալ, զյաղթութիւն զուարճացեալ մատուցանէր. զի փառքն զօրութեանց յերկնից օգնականութեան Տեառն իւրեանց լուսով իջեալ շուրջանակի պատեա՛լ հաստատեալ պահէին: Կիսոցն սրտմտութիւն բարկութեան ըստ հպարտութեան զօրավարացն ածեալ պնդեա՛լ շտա՛պ տագնապի ՛ի տեղին հասուցանէին[239]:

Now the sun being newly risen, they joined both together; the one part having together with their virtue their refuge also unto the Lord for a pledge of their success and victory: the other side making their rage leader of their battle:

Այն ինչ լինէր նորա զանաչա՛ռ զանողորմ ձեռն պատերազմի ՛ի գո՛րծ արկանել. եւ երեւեցան յերկնից արք հինգ հեծեալ սպառազէն վառեալ ՛ի զէ՛ն ոսկի` եւ ՛ի զարդ ոսկի, որ եկին իջին առ գնդաւն թշնամեացն. գային խառնէին ՛ի գունդ Եբրայեցւոց[240]:

But when the battle waxed strong, there appeared unto the enemies from heaven five comely men upon horses, with bridles of gold, and two of them led the Jews:

Որք ՛ի մէջ առեալ զՅուդա Մակաբէ, յառա՛ջ խաղային իւրեանց զինուքն ծածուկ վառեալ, առաւել յառաջ տանէին քան իւրով զինուն. զի յամենայն կողմանց նետք եւ տէգք որ գային ՛ի վերայ` առ հասարակ ՛ի բա՛ց թօթափէին. եւ ինքեանք իւրեանց նետիւք լի բարկութեամբ զաչս թշնամեացն` բուռն դէ՛պ կալեալ առ հասարակ ՛ի կուրութիւն դարձուցանէին. եւ խռովեալ զօրքն թշնամեացն ընդ միմեանս խառնէին[241]:

And took Maccabeus betwixt them, and covered him on every side weapons, and kept him safe, but shot arrows and lightnings against the enemies: so that being confounded with blindness, and full of trouble, they were killed:

Յա՛յնժամ յա՛յնմ աւուր անկեալ գտանէր ՛ի գնդէ անտի թշնամեացն առաջի նոցա քսան հազար եւ հինգ հարիւր սպառազէն:

And there were slain of footmen twenty thousand and five hundred, and six hundred horsemen:

Եւ ինքն Տիմոթէոս պրծեալ ընդ ամբոխն ՛ի փախուստ դառնայր. եկն անկաւ ՛ի Գազարա քաղաք մի ամուր, ուր ինքնին Քերէաս զօրագլուխ էր[242]:

As for Timotheus himself, he fled into a very strong hold, called Gawra, where Chereas was governor:

Եւ Մակաբէ զօրօքն եկն փակեաց պաշարեաց զամուրն ՛ի չո՛րս աւուրս:

But they that were with Maccabeus laid siege against the fortress courageously four days:

Իսկ այն որ ՛ի ներքս անդ էին, յամրութիւն քաղաքին յուսացեալ էին, ա՛յպն կատա՛կ լինէին Եբրայեցւոցն. եւ բանս կսկծելիս թշնամանաց առ իւրեանց չարի ՛ի նոսա՛ արձակէին[243]:

And they that were within, trusting to the strength of the place, blasphemed exceedingly, and uttered wicked words:

Իբրեւ օրն հինգօրեայ շաբաթուց լուսանա՛լ կամէր, արք ընտիրք քսան ՛ի գնդէ անտի Եբրայեցւոցն` Մակաբէիւ հանդերձ` լի՛ նախանձու բարկութեամբ զէ՛նս առեալ ընդ դուռն քաղաքին ՛ի ներքս յարձակեցան քաջութեամբ գազանաբար: Զորս առ դրա՛նն գտին առ ո՛տս իւրեանց կոտորեցին:

Nevertheless upon the fifth day early twenty young men of Maccabeus' company, inflamed with anger because of the blasphemies, assaulted the wall manly, and with a fierce courage killed all that they met withal:

Եւ զօրքն առ հասարակ շուրջ զպարսպօքն յարձակեցան. եւ զայն աղմուկ եւ զաղաղակ ՛ի վերայ քաղաքին հասուցանէին, զի որ զօրք պարսպապահ ՛ի վե՛ր անդ կային, որ ՛ի ներքս` որ արտաքս` քան զտեղ քան զտարափ թանձր եւ արագ վերուստ ՛ի վայր թօթափէին. եւ ինքեանք առ հասարակ ՛ի ներքս անկանէին. զաշտարակս բերդին եւ զամենայն փայտակերտ քաղաքին հրձի՛գ առնէին. զդրունսն այրէին եւ զմենքենայսն. եւ զամենայն երեւելի եւ երեւելի՛ գործի` ՛ի բա՛ց ապականէին: Ապա խարոյկս ՛ի մէջ քաղաքին արկանէին, եւ զհայհոյիչ թշնամանօղսն ՛ի նմա այրէին[244]:

Others likewise ascending after them, whiles they were busied with them that were within, burnt the towers, and kindling fires burnt the blasphemers alive; and others broke open the gates, and, having received in the rest of the army, took the city:

Եւ զամենայն զինչս եւ զստացուածս եւ զօրէնս եւ զկարգս քաղաքին, զայն ՛ի ձեռն առնուին. մինչեւ զՏիմոթէոս եկին գտին փախուցեալ թաքուցեալ ՛ի գբի միոջ. զնա եւ զՔերէոս եղբայր նորա, եւ զԱպողոփանէս ՛ի նո՛յն գուբ փողոտեցին[245]:

And killed Timotheus, that was hid in a certain pit, and Chereas his brother, with Apollophanes:

Զայս ամենայն իբրեւ գործեցին կազմեցին` օրհնութեամբ ցնծութեամբ գոհութեամբ ուրախութեամբ օրհնէին զՏէր, որ մեծաւ քաջութեամբ քաջ անուամբ զյաղթութիւն պատրաստեաց ՛ի ձեռն Իսրայէլի:

When this was done, they praised the Lord with psalms and thanksgiving, who had done so great things for Israel, and given them the victory:
