9:1 Ընդ այն ժամանակս դէ՛պ եղեւ դառնալ Անտիոքայ մեծաւ անարգանօք ՛ի կողմանցն Պարսից. քանզի էր երթեալ նա ՛ի քաղաքն ՛ի բո՛ւն նոցա, խորհեցաւ ձեռն արկանել զգանձիւն. եւ թէ հնարեսցի զքաղա՛քն իսկ աւերել ջանայր: Իբրեւ զա՛յն զգացին զօրք քաղաքին, առ հասարակ ՛ի զէնս իւրեանց ընթացան. եւ զա՛յն որ մեծաւ սաստկութեամբ ՛ի վերայ երթեալ էր. անարժա՛ն կորակո՛ր յանձանց ՛ի բա՛ց մերժէին[199]:

9:1 About that time came Antiochus with dishonour out of the country of Persia:
|
9:2 Իբրեւ չո՛ւ առնէր խաղայր գնայր ամօթալից Անտիոքոս ՛ի կողմանցն Պարսից, գայր հասանէր ՛ի կողմանս Եկբատանայ. ա՛զդ լինէր նմա որ ինչ անցք անցեալ էին ընդ նա:

9:2 For he had entered the city called Persepolis, and went about to rob the temple, and to hold the city; whereupon the multitude running to defend themselves with their weapons put them to flight; and so it happened, that Antiochus being put to flight of the inhabitants returned with shame:

9:3 Զմտաւ ածէր զստահակութիւն քաղաքացւոցն որ զնա ՛ի փախո՛ւստ դարձուցին[200]:
|
9:3 Now when he came to Ecbatane, news was brought him what had happened unto Nicanor and Timotheus:
|
9:4 Լցեա՛լ սրտմտութեամբ` զերկոցունց կողմանցն զմտաւ ածէր յԵրուսաղեմացիս անդ յագեցուցանել զսրտմտութիւն բարկութեան իւրոյ. վասն այսորիկ հրամա՛ն տայր կառավարին, ստէ՛պ տագնապաւ անդադար տայր վարել. միտ եդեալ ճանապարհին: Զայն ինչ ո՛չ ածէր զմտաւ, թէ յերկնից իրաւունք ինչ ո՛չ երթային. բայց ինքն մեծամեծս փքայր ՛ի հպարտութիւն ամբարտաւանութեան իւրոյ, եւ ասէր անմարդի՛ զԵրուսաղէմ Հրէից հասուցանել[201]:

9:4 Then swelling with anger. he thought to avenge upon the Jews the disgrace done unto him by those that made him flee. Therefore commanded he his chariotman to drive without ceasing, and to dispatch the journey, the judgment of GOd now following him. For he had spoken proudly in this sort, That he would come to Jerusalem and make it a common burying place of the Jew s:

9:5 Իսկ ամենակալ Բարձրեալն Տէր Աստուած Իսրայէլի եհար զնա աներեւոյթ հարուածովք. ա՛յն ինչ բանքն ՛ի բերան նորա էին, ցա՛ւք սաստիկք եւ անհնարին ոսկերաց ՛ի վերայ հասանէին, եւ դառնութեան խիթք ՛ի փո՛ր անկանէին[202]:

9:5 But the Lord Almighty, the God of Isreal, smote him with an incurable and invisible plague: or as soon as he had spoken these words, a pain of the bowels that was remediless came upon him, and sore torments of the inner parts:
|
9:6 Կարի՛ յիրաւունս. զի որ բազում նորանոր չարաչար ցաւս յայլոց մարմինս տանջանօք հասուցանէր, նոյն սաստկութեան ցաւք զնովաւ անկեալ պաշարեալ պահէին:
|
9:6 And that most justly: for he had tormented other men' s bowels with many and strange torments:
|
9:7 Սակայն եւ այնպէս ո՛չ կասէր ՛ի հպարտութենէ անտի, այլ առաւել բորբոքէր ամբարտաւանութեամբ բարկութեամբ ՛ի վերայ Հեբրայեցւոց. ստիպէ՛ր ճեպել ՛ի ճանապարհ, մինչ դէ՛պ եղեւ նմա անկանել ՛ի կառաց անտի` մինչդեռ գայր նա տագնապաւ: Ա՛նդ անկանէր ՛ի չարաչա՛ր տանջանս. զի ամենայն ոսկերքն առ հասարակ խորտակէին[203]:

9:7 Howbeit he nothing at all ceased from his bragging, but still was filled with pride, breathing out fire in his rage against the Jews, and commanding to haste the journey: but it came to pass that he fell down from his chariot, carried violently; so that having a sore fall, all the members of his body were much pained:

9:8 Եւ այն` որ ա՛յնինչ կամէր ՛ի վերայ ալեաց ծովու սաստել վասն անօրէն հպարտութեանն, եւ զվերին լերանցն ներքի՛ն առնել, եւ զներքին վերի՛ն. զնա ինքն յերկիր հողեալ, շալակա՛ւ շրջեցուցանէին. յայտնապէս Աստուծոյ զօրութեանցն երեւեցելոց[204]:

9:8 And thus he that a little afore thought he might command the waves of the sea, ( so proud was he beyond the condition of man) and weigh the high mountains in a balance, was now cast on the ground, and carried in an horselitter, shewing forth unto all the manifest power of God:
|
9:9 Մինչեւ յաչա՛ց անտի անօրինին եռանդն որդանց բղխեալ սորսորել. եւ կենդանութեամբ իւրով ախտին ցաւոց զանդամսն ՛ի միմեանց յօշել: Եւ ՛ի նեխո՛յն հոտոյ զօրացն ամենայնի նեղել տագնապաւ:

9:9 So that the worms rose up out of the body of this wicked man, and whiles he lived in sorrow and pain, his flesh fell away, and the filthiness of his smell was noisome to all his army:
|
9:10 Եւ որ յառաջն հպարտացեալ մտօք զաստեղս երկնից ամփոփե՛լ համարէր, այսր անդր շրջշրջել ո՛չոք կարէր վասն նեխոյն հոտոյ տագնապի[205]:
|
9:10 And the man, that thought a little afore he could reach to the stars of heaven, no man could endure to carry for his intolerable stink:
|
9:11 Յայնմ վայրի սկսաւ բեկանել ՛ի հպարտ յամբարտաւան խստութենէ անտի, եւ ՛ի միտս իւր իջանէր առ տանջանացն Աստուծոյ. միով միով ցաւօք ՛ի վերայ հարեալ մարմնոյն զայրացելոյ[206]:

9:11 Here therefore, being plagued, he began to leave off his great pride, and to come to the knowledge of himself by the scourge of God, his pain increasing every moment:
|
9:12 զի եւ ինքն իսկ ո՛չ կարէր ժո՛յժ ունել ՛ի նեխոյ հոտո՛յ անտի: Սկսաւ ա՛յսպէս խօսել. Պա՛րտ եւ պատշա՛ճ է հնազանդ լինել Տեառն Աստուծոյ, եւ մի՛ ՛ի մարմինս մահկանացուս աստուածակե՛րպ օրինակ բարձրանալ[207]:

9:12 And when he himself could not abide his own smell, he said these words, It is meet to be subject unto God, and that a man that is mortal should not proudly think of himself if he were God:
|
9:13 Աղաչէ՛ր, ո՛ւխտս դնէր առ ա՛յն որ չէ՛ր նմա ողորմելոց[208]:
|
9:13 This wicked person vowed also unto the Lord, who now no more would have mercy upon him, saying thus:
|
9:14 Վասն զսուրբ քաղաքն հարթ յատա՛կ եւ անմարդի՛ կացուցանել, զայն մարդաշա՛տ եւ ազատ ցուցանել[209]:
|
9:14 That the holy city ( to the which he was going in haste to lay it even with the ground, and to make it a common buryingplace,) he would set at liberty:
|
9:15 ԶՀեբրայեցիսն որոց սպառնայր` ո՛չ պատանաց եւ ո՛չ թաղելոյ արժանի առնել, այլ կանամբք եւ մանկտւով ՛ի հաւակերի՛ դնել գազանաբե՛կս արարեալ, զնոսա քաղաքակի՛ցս իւր` հաւասա՛րս Աթենացւոց գրով մուրհակօք կացուցանել[210]:

9:15 And as touching the Jews, whom he had judged not worthy so much as to be buried, but to be cast out with their children to be devoured of the fowls and wild beasts, he would make them all equals to the citizens of Athens:
|
9:16 Եւ զտաճարն սուրբ` զոր յառաջ սպառնայր կապո՛ւտ կողոպո՛ւտ թողուլ, գեղեցի՛կ պատարագօք զարդարեցից. եւ զզարդ եւ զսպաս տաճարին որ յառաջ անտի տարեալ իցէ, բազմապատի՛կ անդրէն դարձուցանել. եւ զկարգս մտից պիտոյ պատարագաց յարքունո՛ւստ լնուլ[211]:

9:16 And the holy temple, which before he had spoiled, he would garnish with goodly gifts, and restore all the holy vessels with many more, and out of his own revenue defray the charges belonging to the sacrifices:
|
9:17 Եւ ՛ի վերայ այսր ամենայնի Հեբրայեցի՛ եւս լինել. եւ յամենայն մարդաշէն տեղիս հասանել պատմե՛լ զզօրութիւն մեծութեանցն Աստուծոյ:
|
9:17 Yea, and that also he would become a Jew himself, and go through all the world that was inhabited, and declare the power of God:
|
9:18 Իբրեւ ո՛չինչ էր հնա՛ր ցաւոցն դադարել, զի հասեա՛լ էր ՛ի վերայ նորա պատուհասն ՛ի Տեառնէ արդա՛ր դատաստանաւ. իբրեւ ակն ինչ ո՛չ կալաւ այնուհետեւ ապրելոյ իւրոյ. հրովարտա՛կս առնէր առ Եբրայեցիսն մեծա՛ւ խոնարհութեամբ` օրինակաւս այսուիկ[212]:

9:18 But for all this his pains would not cease: for the just judgment of God was come upon him: therefore despairing of his health, he wrote unto the Jews the letter underwritten, containing the form of a supplication, after this manner:
|
9:19 Առ քա՛ղցր Հեբրայեցիս. առ ընկերս եղբարս քաղաքակիցս, ողջո՛յն յոյժ[213]:
|
9:19 Antiochus, king and governor, to the good Jews his citizens wisheth much joy, health, and prosperity:
|
9:20 Շնո՛րհ յոյժ ունիմ վասն ձեր յԱստուծոյ:
|
9:20 If ye and your children fare well, and your affairs be to your contentment, I give very great thanks to God, having my hope in heaven:
|
9:21 Եւ ես ՛ի տկարութեան իմում յանհնարին հիւանդութեան մեծա՛ւ գթով յիշեցի զձեզ: Դարձեա՛լ եմ ես ՛ի կողմանց Պարսից, եւ անկայ ՛ի հիւանդութիւն դժուարին. եւ այսպէս լա՛ւ համարեցայ ՛ի մտի իմում վասն օգտի հասարակաց եւ շինութեան[214]:

9:21 As for me, I was weak, or else I would have remembered kindly your honour and good will returning out of Persia, and being taken with a grievous disease, I thought it necessary to care for the common safety of all:
|
9:22 Եւ իմ` ո՛չ եթէ յո՛յս ինչ հատեալ է վասն կենաց, այլ ա՛կն ունիմ ապրել ՛ի դժուարին հիւանդութենէ աստի:
|
9:22 Not distrusting mine health, but having great hope to escape this sickness:
|
9:23 Բայց եւ յա՛յն վայր հայեցայ, եթէ հայրն ՛ի ժամանակի յորում վերակողմն կողման չուեալ գնացեալ երթայր` ցո՛յց նա զփոխանակն իւր[215]:
|
9:23 But considering that even my father, at what time he led an army into the high countries. appointed a successor:
|
9:24 զի եթէ որ ինչ անցք անցցեն ընդ նա, կամ համբաւ ինչ դժուարին եկեսցէ` գիտիցե՛ն ում պահեալ կայ` եւ յա՛նձն է տեղին, եւ մի՛ խռովեսցին:
|
9:24 To the end that, if any thing fell out contrary to expectation, or if any tidings were brought that were grievous, they of the land, knowing to whom the state was left, might not be troubled:
|
9:25 Եւ թո՛ղ զայս` հայեցայ ես շուրջ զմեւք ՛ի մերձաւորս արքայութեան մերոյ, եւ որ շուրջ զմեւք` ընդ ակամբ հայէին ՛ի մեզ. յա՛յտ արարի ես զորդի իմ զԱնտիոքոս ՛ի տեղի իմ թագաւորութեան. զոր բազում անգամ արդեւք իբրեւ չո՛ւ արարեալ իմ գնայի, ՛ի վերին կողմանս երթանայի. բազմա՛ց ումեք ՛ի ձէնջ յանձն արարեալ` եւ ՛ի ձեռն եդեա՛լ երթայի: Այլ ես` եւ առ նոսա գրեցի պատճէնիւդ այդուիկ, զոր առ ձեզդ ՛ի ներքոյ գրեցի[216]:

9:25 Again, considering how that the princes that are borderers and neighbours unto my kingdom wait for opportunities, and expect what shall be the event. I have appointed my son Antiochus king, whom I often committed and commended unto many of you, when I went up into the high provinces; to whom I have written as followeth:
|
9:26 Արդ աղաչե՛մ զձեզ` յիշե՛լ ձեզ զերախտիսն զառ հասարակ բարեացն. եւ սէր օգուտ առ իւրաքանչիւր` պահել ընդ իս զհաւանութիւն միաբանութեան` եւ առ որդիդ իմ[217]:
|
9:26 Therefore I pray and request you to remember the benefits that I have done unto you generally, and in special, and that every man will be still faithful to me and my son:
|
9:27 զի զայս ինչ հաստատեա՛լ հաւատացեալ գիտեմ, թէ քաղցրագոյն մարդասիրագոյն եւս յանկիցէ՛ ՛ի ձեզ` զիմոց բարուց զկնի՛ հայեցեալ[218]:
|
9:27 For I am persuaded that he understanding my mind will favourably and graciously yield to your desires:
|
9:28 Եւ մարդախոշո՛շն` անօրէն հայհոյիչն, զա՛յս օրինակ անկեալ կործանեալ սատակամա՛հ լինէր, յօտար լերինս չարաչար տանջանօք զոր ընդ այլս անցոյց` կարճէր ՛ի կենաց անտի:

9:28 Thus the murderer and blasphemer having suffered most grievously, as he entreated other men, so died he a miserable death in a strange country in the mountains:
|
9:29 Իսկ Փիլիպպոս դայեկորդի իւր որ առեալ տանէր զմարմին նորա` երկեա՛ւ յորդւոյ անտի. առ Պտղոմէո՛ս յերկիրն Եգիպտացւոց հատուածով փախստեա՛յ լինէր[219]:

9:29 And Philip, that was brought up with him, carried away his body, who also fearing the son of Antiochus went into Egypt to Ptolemeus Philometor:
