2:1 Սկսան աղաչե՛լ եւ ասել. Տէր Տէր թագաւո՛ր երկնից, եւ Տէր Աստուած ամենայն արարածոց, սուրբ սրբոց, ամենազօր ամենակալ, հայեա՛ց ՛ի ցաւագնութիւնս մեր որ ՛ի ձեռն անօրինին եւ պղծոյն` որ յանդգնութեամբ հպարտացեալ է[15]:

2:1 Then the high priest Simon, facing the sanctuary, bending his knees and extending his hands with calm dignity, prayed as follows: " Lord, Lord, king of the heavens, and sovereign of all creation, holy among the holy ones, the only ruler, almighty, give attention to us who are suffering grievously from an impious and profane man, puffed up in his audacity and power:

2:2 Դո՛ւ ստեղծեր զամենայն. դու որ զամենայն ընդունիս հեզութեամբ եւ արդարութեամբ. արդա՛ր ես դու Տէր, եւ որ հպարտութեամբ եւ ամբարտաւանութեամբ ինչ գործեն` դատի՛ս զնոսա. դու` որ յառաջ զանօրէնութիւնսն գործէին հսկայս` որ յանձանց զօրութիւն եւ ՛ի քաջութիւն յուսացեալ էին` ջնջեցեր, ածե՛ր ՛ի վերայ նոցա զանչա՛փ ջուրցն սաստկութիւն:

2:2 For you, the creator of all things and the governor of all, are a just Ruler, and you judge those who have done anything in insolence and arrogance. You destroyed those who in the past committed injustice, among whom were even giants who trusted in their strength and boldness, whom you destroyed by bringing upon them a boundless flood:

2:3 Դու` որ գործէին զամբարտաւանութիւն զՍոդոմացիսն` յա՛յտ յանդիմանութեամբ չարեօքն իւրեանց հանդերձ` խայտառակեցեր, ՛ի հո՛ւր եւ ՛ի ծծումբ դատեցեր, եւ առակ խայտառակութեան յետնոց թողեալ[16]:

2:3 You consumed with fire and sulphur the men of Sodom who acted arrogantly, who were notorious for their vices; and you made them an example to those who should come afterward:
|
2:4 Դու` զյանդուգն զբուռն արքայն սաստիկ զփարաւոն` որ արկ ՛ի ծառայութիւն զժողովուրդ քո սուրբ զԻսրայէլ` պէսպէ՛ս հարուածովք կշտամբեցեր. ցուցեր զքո զօրութիւն, եւ ցուցեր դու նմա զմեծութիւն զօրութեան քոյ, զի պատրաստեալ զհետ հեծանէր ժողովրդեան քոյ բազում զօրօք` կառօք եւ երիվարօք, ընկլուզեր զնա ՛ի ծով Կարմիր:

2:4 You made known your mighty power by inflicting many and varied punishments on the audacious Pharaoh who had enslaved your holy people Israel. And when he pursued them with chariots and a mass of troops, you overwhelmed him in the depths of the sea:
|
2:5 Բայց զայնոսիկ որ հաւատացինն ՛ի քեզ, ՛ի վերայ ամենայն արարածոց զօրացեալս պահեցեր. որք իբրեւ տեսին զգործս ձեռաց քոց, օրհնեցի՛ն զքեզ Տէր ամենակալ: Դու` թագաւոր, որ ստեղծեր զանչափ զանքննին զերկինս ամենայն, եւ ընտրեցեր քեզ զքաղաքս զայս, եւ սրբեցեր զտեղիս զայս յանուն քո քե՛զ որ աննիա՛զդ ես յամենայնի[17]:

2:5 but carried through safely those who had put their confidence in you, the Ruler over the whole creation. And when they had seen works of your hands, they praised you, the Almighty. You, O King, when you had created the boundless and immeasurable earth, chose this city and sanctified this place for your name, though you have no need of anything:

2:6 Դո՛ւ ժողովեցեր զսա ՛ի փառս մեծութեան, եւ ՛ի պատիւ անուան քոյ. դո՛ւ սիրեցեր զտաճարս զայս, եւ խոստացար դու տանս Իսրայէլի, բա՛մ, ինչ դէպք որ հասանիցեն, կամ նեղութիւնք որ գայցեն ՛ի վերայ, գալ հասանել յայս տեղի սրբութեան խնդրուածովք, լսելի՛ առնել զաղօթս մեր: Արդ հաւատարի՛մ է բան քո` եւ ճշմարիտ[18]:

2:6 and when you had glorified it by your magnificent manifestation, you made it a firm foundation for the glory of your great and honored name. And because you love the house of Israel, you promised that if we should have reverses, and tribulation should overtake us, you would listen to our petition when we come to this place and pray. And indeed you are faithful and true:

2:7 քանզի բազում անգամ յորժամ նեղեցան հարքն մեր` օգնեցե՛ր դու նոցա ՛ի խոնարհութեան իւրեանց, եւ փրկեցե՛ր դու զնոսա ՛ի մեծամեծ չարեաց: Արդ աւասիկ եւ մե՛ք սուրբ թագաւոր, վասն մեծամեծ եւ բազում մեղաց մերոց չարչարեալք, հնազանդեալ եմք ՛ի թշնամեաց մերոց պարտասեալք եւ տարակուսեալք ՛ի տկարութեան մերում, եւ յաւուրս նեղութեան յայսմիկ. պիղծս հպարտս եւ ամբարտաւանս սպրդէ հնարել ՛ի նե՛րքս անկանել, թշնամանել զտեղի սրբութեան զանուանի ընդ ամենայն երկիր երեւեալ տաճա՛ր փառաց անուան քոյ[19]:

2:7 And because oftentimes when our fathers were oppressed you helped them in their humiliation, and rescued them from great evils, see now, O holy King, that because of our many and great sins we are crushed with suffering, subjected to our enemies, and overtaken by helplessness. In our downfall this audacious and profane man undertakes to violate the holy place on earth dedicated to your glorious name:

2:8 Թէպէտ եւ բնակութիւն քո երկնից երկի՛նք են, աներեւոյթ անձեռնհաս ձեռին մարդոյ. սակայն վասն զի հաճեցար փառօք քովք ընդ վայելչութիւն Իսրայէլի. սրբեցեր զտեղիս զայս. թէպէտ եւ յանցաւո՛ր եմք քեզ, մի՛ խնդրեր զվրէժն զայն հեթանոսաց պղծութեամբ. եւ մի՛ պարծեսցին անօրէնք յիւրեանց հպարտութիւնն, եւ մի՛ ցնծասցեն յամբարտաւանութիւն խօսից իւրեանց. խօսիցեն` թէ մեք կոխեցաք զտաճարն սրբութեան, զորօրինակ կոխիցին խառնակոխ յատակք մեհենից[20]:

2:8 For your dwelling, the heaven of heavens, is unapproachable by man. But because you graciously bestowed your glory upon your people Israel, you sanctified this place. Do not punish us for the defilement committed by these men, or call us to account for this profanation, lest the transgressors boast in their wrath or exult in the arrogance of their tongue, saying, ` We have trampled down the house of the sanctuary as offensive houses are trampled down:

2:9 Ջնջեա՛ զմեղս մեր, եւ ցրուեա՛ զամենայն յանցանս մեր, երեւեցո՛ զողորմութիւնս քո ըստ ժամանակիս ըստ այսմիկ: Վաղվաղակի ժամանեսցե՛ն մեզ ողորմութիւնք քո. եւ տո՛ւր օրհնութիւն ՛ի բերան կործանելոցս եւ չարչարելոց. եւ արա՛ ընդ մեզ խաղաղութիւն[21]:

2:9 Wipe away our sins and disperse our errors, and reveal your mercy at this hour. Speedily let your mercies overtake us, and put praises in the mouth of those who are downcast and broken in spirit, and give us peace:

2:10 Իսկ սուրբն որ ՛ի սուրբս բնակեալ է, ամենազօ՛րն ամենակա՛լն Աստուած լուաւ զօրինաւոր զաղօթս խնդրուածոց ժողովրդեանն: Զայն` որ ա՛րդ եւս հպարտութեամբ ամբարտաւանութեամբ մեծաւ ՛ի վերայ նոցա համարձակ սաստկացեալ էր. հարկանէր զնա աստի անտի սաստիկ. տանէ՛ր եւ շարժէ՛ր զնա իբրեւ զեղէգն ՛ի հողմոյ, եւ անդէն զգետնէր: Եւ նա ա՛յնպէս անկեալ դնէր անզգայ ընդարմացեալ անմռունչ` անդամալոյծ լուծեալ յամենայն յօդից. զի սաստիկ եւ արագ արագ հասանէր ՛ի վերայ նորա դատաստանքն հպարտութեան[22]:

2:10 Thereupon God, who oversees all things, the first Father of all, holy among the holy ones, having heard the lawful supplication, scourged him who had exalted himself in insolence and audacity. He shook him on this side and that as a reed is shaken by the wind, so that he lay helpless on the ground and, besides being paralyzed in his limbs, was unable even to speak, since he was smitten by a righteous judgment:

2:11 Բարեկամքն եւ որ զնովաւ սպասաւորքն էին, իբրեւ տեսին թէ այնպէս արագ հասանէր ՛ի վերայ նորա դատաստանն, զահի հարկանէին, թէ գուցէ եւ ոգիքն սպառիցին. եւ վաղվաղակի զնա ՛ի ներքուստ արտաքս քարշէին. զարհուրեալք ՛ի սաստիկ հարուածոց անտի[23]:

2:11 Then both friends and bodyguards, seeing the severe punishment that had overtaken him, and fearing lest he should lose his life, quickly dragged him out, panic- stricken in their exceedingly great fear:

2:12 Իբրեւ ժա՛մք հարուստ ՛ի վերայ անցին, եւ առնն միտք յինքն եկին: Սակայն ո՛չ եթէ զղջացաւ ՛ի միտս իւր յե՛տ մեծի պատուհասին, այլ սաստկագո՛յնս եւս սկսաւ սպառնալ:
Հրամայէր չու դարձս առնել[24]:

2:12 After a while he recovered, and though he had been punished, he by no means repented, but went away uttering bitter threats:

2:13 Իբրեւ եկն եհաս յերկիրն Եգիպտացւոց. եւ զչարութիւնն եւ՛ս քան զեւս յանձն իւր աճեցուցանէր, տաճարակից ընկերովքն իւրովք` մեկնելովք յամենայն իրաւանց. եւ ո՛չ միայն անթիւ աղտեղութեամբքն չյագեցաւ, եւ յանչափ յանդգնութիւն հասանէր, զի հայհոյութեամբ զտեղին լնոյր: Զի բազումք ՛ի բարեկամաց անտի իբրեւ ընդ թագաւորն նայէին` եւ ինքեանք զհետ երթային կամաց նորա:

2:13 When he arrived in Egypt, he increased in his deeds of malice, abetted by the previously mentioned drinking companions and comrades, who were strangers to everything just. He was not content with his uncounted licentious deeds, but he also continued with such audacity that he framed evil reports in the various localities; and many of his friends, intently observing the king' s purpose, themselves also followed his will:

2:14 Գի՛ր առնէր` եւ ՛ի հրապարակս տայր տարածանել, բամբասանս` եւ հայհոյութիւնս: Եւ զսրահիւն շուրջ ՛ի վերայ աշտարակացն արձա՛նս հրամայէր կանգնել, եւ գի՛ր հաստատել, հրամա՛ն տալ սաստկութեամբ: Ապա թէ իցէ ոք այնր` գտցի որ ո՛չ զոհիցէ. մի՛ իշխել ամենեւին մտանել ՛ի տաճար անդր: Եւ զամենայն ազգն Հրէից յաշխարհագի՛ր խառնել, ՛ի կարգս հարկի ծառայութեան օրինի: Եւ որ սակաւ մի խեռեալ ընդդէմ դառնայցեն, պատուհաս մահու ՛ի վերայ նոցա. եւ զոր ոչն սպանանիցեն, դրոշմեալս հրով նշանաւորս որմզդական դիցն տօնի ո՛ստս ՛ի ձեռն պսակաւորս կաքաւեցուցանել[25]:

2:14 He proposed to inflict public disgrace upon the Jewish community, and he set up a stone on the tower in the courtyard with this inscription: " None of those who do not sacrifice shall enter their sanctuaries, and all Jews shall be subjected to a registration involving poll tax and to the status of slaves. Those who object to this are to be taken by force and put to death; those who are registered are also to be branded on their bodies by fire with the ivy- leaf symbol of Dionysus, and they shall also be reduced to their former limited status:

2:15 Այլ զի մի՛ ամենեցուն իբրեւ զթշնամի երեւեսցի, զա՛յս եւս հրամայեաց գրել ՛ի հրովարտակի անդ. ապա թէ իցեն ոմանք ՛ի նոցանէ որ յօժարիցեն զօրէնս արքունի յանձինս իւրեանց ունել, զսոսա քաղաքակի՛ցս Աղեքսանդրացւոց համարել[26]:

2:15 In order that he might not appear to be an enemy to all, he inscribed below: " But if any of them prefer to join those who have been initiated into the mysteries, they shall have equal citizenship with the Alexandrians:

2:16 Բազումք ՛ի նոցանէ ծանծաղամիտք, որ յառա՛ջն իսկ գայթի գայթի կային յօրէնսն առաջինս, դիւրաւ տային զանձինս իւրեանց ՛ի ներքս. իբրեւ մե՛ծ իմն անուն փառաց ժառանգել խորհէին, եթէ մտաց թագաւորին հնազանդեսցին[27]:

2:16 Now some, however, with an obvious abhorrence of the price to be exacted for maintaining the religion of their city, readily gave themselves up, since they expected to enhance their reputation by their future association with the king:

2:17 Բազումք ՛ի նոցանէ պնդեցան հաստատեցան ՛ի սիրտս իւրեանց. եւ ո՛չ դրդուեցան յօրինացն իւրեանց սրբութեան. արկին առաջի զգանձս իւրեանց` տա՛լ փոխանակ անձանց իւրեանց. զի յաներկե՛ւղս զանձինս իւրեանց փրկեսցեն ՛ի գրոյ անտի. եւ յուսո՛վ հաստատեսցին օգնականութիւն գտանել: Եւ որ մեկնէին ՛ի նոցանէ, խորշէին` գարշէին, եւ զնոսա պիղծս համարէին. որոշէին զատանէին յօրինացն հայրենի. եւ յազնուութենէ անտի սրբութեան զնոսա ՛ի բա՛ց մերժեցին[28]:

2:17 But the majority acted firmly with a courageous spirit and did not depart from their religion; and by paying money in exchange for life they confidently attempted to save themselves from the registration. They remained resolutely hopeful of obtaining help, and they abhorred those who separated themselves from them, considering them to be enemies of the Jewish nation, and depriving them of common fellowship and mutual help:
