16:1 Եւ ել Յովհան ՛ի Գազարայ, եւ եկն պատմեաց Շմաւոնի հօր իւրում. որպէս եւ գնայր Կենդէբոս:

16:1 Then came up John from Gazera, and told Simon his father what Cendebeus had done:
|
16:2 Եւ կոչեաց Շմաւոն զերկոսին որդիսն զՅուդայ եւ զՅովհան, եւ ասէ ցնոսա. Ե՛ս եւ եղբարք իմ եւ տուն հօր իմոյ` մա՛րտ պատերազմի տուաք ընդ թշնամիսն Իսրայէլացւոց, ՛ի մանկութենէ մերմէ մինչեւ ցայսօր ժամանակի, եւ աջողեցան գործքն ամենայն ՛ի ձեռս մեր, փրկել զբազումս զազգսդ Իսրայէլացւոց[442]:

16:2 Wherefore Simon called his two eldest sons, Judas and John, and said unto them, I, and my brethren, and my father' s house, have ever from my youth unto this day fought against the enemies of Israel; and things have prospered so well in our hands, that we have delivered Israel oftentimes:
|
16:3 Բայց արդ ծերացայ, եւ դուք հերի՛ք էք յամս իմ, փոխանակ իմ եւ եղբօր իմոյ. արդ ելէ՛ք մարտերո՛ւք ՛ի վերայ ազգիդ մերոյ. եւ զօրութիւն օգնութեանց յերկնից եղիցի ընդ ձեզ[443]:

16:3 But now I am old, and ye, by God' s mercy, are of a sufficient age: be ye instead of me and my brother, and go and fight for our nation, and the help from heaven be with you:
|
16:4 Եւ ընտրեաց նա յաշխարհէ անտի իբրեւ քսան հազար հեծեալ սպառազէն, եւ խաղաց ՛ի վերայ Կենդեբեայ[444]:
|
16:4 So he chose out of the country twenty thousand men of war with horsemen, who went out against Cendebeus, and rested that night at Modin:
|
16:5 Եւ եկին ագան ա՛յն օր ՛ի Մովդիիմ. ընդ առաւօտն կանխեալ` լինէին դաշտամուխ: Ա՛նդ տեսանէին զօրս բազումս հեծեալս եւ հետեւակս, որ գային ընդդէմ նորա. եւ հեղեղա՛տ մի էր ՛ի մէջ երկոցուն[445]:

16:5 And when as they rose in the morning, and went into the plain, behold, a mighty great host both of footmen and horsemen came against them: howbeit there was a water brook betwixt them:
|
16:6 Եւ ճակատեցաւ յանդիման նոցա ինքն եւ զօրքն: Իբրեւ հայեցաւ ետես զզօրսն թէ դանդաղեցան անցանել ընդ հեղեղատն, յառաջ` ի՛նքն նահատակեցաւ, հա՛պա` զօրքն միագունդ զկնի՛ փողեցան[446]:

16:6 So he and his people pitched over against them: and when he saw that the people were afraid to go over the water brook, he went first over himself, and then the men seeing him passed through after him:
|
16:7 Եւ բաժանեա՛ց յերկուս գունդս զհեծելազօրն ՛ի մէջ հետեւակացն. եւ էր հեծելազօրն կարի յոյժ:
|
16:7 That done, he divided his men, and set the horsemen in the midst of the footmen: for the enemies' horsemen were very many:
|
16:8 Փո՛ղ հարին` խրախո՛յս բարձին, ՛ի վերայ յարձակեցան. ՛ի պարտութի՛ւն մատնեցաւ Կենդէբոս. եւ անկաւ ՛ի նոցանէ յաւուր յայնմիկ վիրաւորք բազումք: Եւ որ մնացեալ էին փախստեա՛յ անկանէին յամուրսն[447]:

16:8 Then sounded they with the holy trumpets: whereupon Cendebeus and his host were put to flight, so that many of them were slain, and the remnant gat them to the strong hold:
|
16:9 Յաւուր յայնմիկ խո՛ց մնայր Յուդա. բայց Յովհան զհե՛տ լինէր փախստեայցն, մինչ ածէր արկանէր զնոսա ՛ի կողմանս Կեդրոնայ զոր շինեաց[448]:
|
16:9 At that time was Judas John' s brother wounded; but John still followed after them, until he came to Cedron, which Cendebeus had built:
|
16:10 Եւ մեկնեցին նոքա ընդ բրգունսն ՛ի կողմանսն Ազովտայ: Եւ հրձիգ արար զնոսա. յայնմ ամրի այրեցան արք ՛ի հրոյ իբրեւ երկու հազար: Եւ ինքն դարձաւ ՛ի կողմանս Հրէաստանի խաղաղութեամբ[449]:

16:10 So they fled even unto the towers in the fields of Azotus; wherefore he burned it with fire: so that there were slain of them about two thousand men. Afterward he returned into the land of Judea in peace:
|
16:11 Եւ Պտղոմէոս Աբբուբեանց` է՛ր կացուցեալ ՛ի կողմանցն դաշտին յԵրեքով. եւ ունէ՛ր նա արծաթ եւ ոսկի յոյժ[450]:
|
16:11 Moreover in the plain of Jericho was Ptolemeus the son of Abubus made captain, and he had abundance of silver and gold:
|
16:12 զի էր նա փեսայ քահանայապետին:
|
16:12 For he was the high priest' s son in law:
|
16:13 Եւ հպարտացաւ ՛ի սիրտ իւր, մեծամտեաց ՛ի խորհուրդս իւր, եւ կամէր տիրե՛լ ՛ի վերայ կողմանցն գաւառին. եւ խորհուրդ խորհէր նենգութեամբ ՛ի վերայ Շմաւոնի եւ որդւոց նորա, ջնջե՛լ զնոսա ՛ի միջոյ[451]:

16:13 Wherefore his heart being lifted up, he thought to get the country to himself, and thereupon consulted deceitfully against Simon and his sons to destroy them:
|
16:14 Եւ Շմաւոն շրջէր ՛ի կողմանս գաւառացն. խնամէ՛ր եւ տեսանէր զպէտս նոցա. եւ եկն էջ յԵրեքով, ի՛նքն եւ Մատաթի եւ Յուդա` եւ որդիք նորա. յամին հարիւրորդի եւթանասներորդի եւթներորդի, յամսեանն մետասաներորդի` այս ամիս շաբա՛թ է[452]:

16:14 Now Simon was visiting the cities that were in the country, and taking care for the good ordering of them; at which time he came down himself to Jericho with his sons, Mattathias and Judas, in the hundred threescore and seventeenth year, in the eleventh month, called Sabat:

16:15 Եւ ընկալաւ զնոսա Պտղոմէոս ՛ի մեծարանս նենգութեամբ ՛ի քաղաքի անդ Դովրայ զոր շինեաց, եւ արար ուրախութիւն կոչնոցն: Ա՛նդ` ՛ի դարանի՛ առնէր արս[453]:

16:15 Where the son of Abubus receiving them deceitfully into a little hold, called Docus, which he had built, made them a great banquet: howbeit he had hid men there:
|
16:16 Եւ իբրեւ կերան եւ արբին Շմաւոն եւ որդիք իւր, արբեցան. յարեա՛ւ Պտղոմէոս թաքուցելովքն հանդերձ, առին զէնս իւրեանց, եւ մտին ՛ի վերայ Շմաւոնի. եւ սպանին անդէն ՛ի տաճարի անդ զնա՛ եւ զորդիս իւր` եւ զծառայսն որ ընդ նմա էին[454]:

16:16 So when Simon and his sons had drunk largely, Ptolemee and his men rose up, and took their weapons, and came upon Simon into the banqueting place, and slew him, and his two sons, and certain of his servants:
|
16:17 Եւ արարին անօրէնութիւն մեծ. եւ հատուցին չա՛ր փոխանակ ընդ բարւոյ[455]:
|
16:17 In which doing he committed a great treachery, and recompensed evil for good:
|
16:18 Եւ գրեա՛ց Պտղոմէոս առ արքայն զի զօր ՛ի թիկո՛ւնս արձակեսցէ նմա, զի ՛ի ձեռս տացէ նոցա զքաղաքսն իւրեանց` եւ զհարկն[456]:
|
16:18 Then Ptolemee wrote these things, and sent to the king, that he should send him an host to aid him, and he would deliver him the country and cities:
|
16:19 Զկէսն արձակեաց ՛ի կողմն Գազարայ` բառնալ անտի զՅովհաննէս: Եւ գրեաց նա առ զօրագլուխսն զի եկեսցեն` եւ առցեն ՛ի նմանէ ոսկի եւ արծաթ եւ պարգեւս բազումս:

16:19 He sent others also to Gazera to kill John: and unto the tribunes he sent letters to come unto him, that he might give them silver, and gold, and rewards:
|
16:20 Եւ այլս արձակեաց յԵրուսաղէմ, զի աճապարեսցեն` հասցե՛ն առցեն զլեառն տաճարին:
|
16:20 And others he sent to take Jerusalem, and the mountain of the temple:
|
16:21 Ա՛յր մի պնդեցաւ յառաջագոյն ՛ի Գազարա, գո՛յժ ետ Յովհաննու` թէ կորեա՛ւ հայր նորա եւ եղբարք իւր, եւ զքէ՛ն եւս յղեալ է նենգութեամբ զի սպանցէ՛ զքեզ[457]:

16:21 Now one had run afore to Gazera and told John that his father and brethren were slain, and, quoth he, Ptolemee hath sent to slay thee also:
|
16:22 Իբրեւ լուաւ` զարմացաւ յոյժ եւ յիմարեցաւ, եւ ըմբռնեաց զարսն զայնս եւ անդէն սպան զնոսա, իբրեւ գիտաց թէ նենգութեամբ եկեալ են կորուսանել զնա:
|
16:22 Hereof when he heard, he was sore astonished: so he laid hands on them that were come to destroy him, and slew them; for he knew that they sought to make him away:
|
16:23 Եւ ա՛յլ ինչ բանք որ իցեն զՅովհաննէ` վասն մարտի պատերազմաց` կամ այլոց քաջութեանց, կամ շինուածոց պարսպաց, կամ գործոցն բարութեան:
|
16:23 As concerning the rest of the acts of John, and his wars, and worthy deeds which he did, and the building of the walls which he made, and his doings:
|
16:24 այն ամենայն գրեալ է ՛ի մատեանս քահանայից, յորմէ հետէ եկաց նա քահանայապետ զկնի հօր իւրոյ:
Կատարեցաւ Առաջին Մակաբայեցիքն[458]:

16:24 Behold, these are written in the chronicles of his priesthood, from the time he was made high priest after his father:
