Յետ բազում ժամանակաց առաքեա՛ց թագաւորն զԱթենեբիոս ծերունի, ստիպե՛լ տագնապել զՀրէայսն, անցանել զհարցն օրինօք, եւ յօրէնսն Աստուծոյ այլ մի՛ եւս յամենալ[131]:

1. And not long after this the king sent forth an old man of Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers, and not to live after the laws of God;

2. and also to pollute the sanctuary in Jerusalem, and to call it by the name of Jupiter Olympius, and the in Gerizim by the name of Jupiter the Protector of strangers, even as they were that dwelt in the place.
6:2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem, and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius; and that in Garizim, of Jupiter the Defender of strangers, as they did desire that dwelt in the place:

Եւ չարաչա՛ր դժուարին նեղութիւն չարեաց ՛ի վերայ հասուցանէին:

3. But sore and utterly grievous was the visitation of this evil.

4. For the temple was filled with riot and revellings by the heathen, who dallied with harlots, and had to do with women within the sacred precincts, and moreover brought inside things that were not befitting;

5. and the place of sacrifice was filled with those abominable things which had been prohibited by the laws.

6. And a man could neither keep the sabbath, nor observe the feasts of the fathers, nor so much as confess himself to be a Jew.
6:6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath days or ancient fasts, or to profess himself at all to be a Jew:

7. And on the day of the king’s birth every month they were led along with bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices; and when the feast of Bacchus came, they were compelled to go in procession in honour of Bacchus, wearing wreaths of ivy.

Հրամա՛ն առաքեցին յամենայն մօտաքաղաքս պաշտօնաւորս լինել. եւ իբրեւ բանս ՛ի բերան եդին Փտողոմայեցիքն, յոր հասո՛ւ իցեն զոհիւք զպաշտօնն պաշտիցեն[136]:

8. And there went out a decree to the neighbouring Greek cities, by the suggestion of Ptolemy, that they should observe the same conduct against the Jews, and should make them eat of the sacrifices;
6:8 Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the heathen, by the suggestion of Ptolemee, against the Jews, that they should observe the same fashions, and be partakers of their sacrifices:

Եւ այն` որ ո՛չ յանձն առնուցուն զոհել` անդէն սուր ՛ի վերայ դնել: Եւ ա՛նդ էր տեսանել շտա՛պ տագնապի տառապանս չարչարելոցն[137]:

9. and that they should slay such as did not choose to go over to the Greek rites. So the present misery was for all to see:
6:9 And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death. Then might a man have seen the present misery:

Նամակագի՛ր եղեն զերկուց կանանց` վասն զորդիս իւրեանց թլփատելոյ. ածի՛ն վաղվաղակի` զմանկունսն զստեանցն կախեցին զմարցն, եւ զնոսա ընդ հրապարակսն առառակէ՛ շրջեցուցանէին. ապա ՛ի պարսպաց անտի ՛ի վա՛յր հոսեցին[138]:

10. for two women were brought up for having circumcised their children; and these, when they had led them publicly round about the city, with the babes hung from their breasts, they cast down headlong from the wall.
6:10 For there were two women brought, who had circumcised their children; whom when they had openly led round about the city, the babes handing at their breasts, they cast them down headlong from the wall:

Կէսքն երթեալ գաղտուկ յա՛յրսն մօտաւորս` զշաբաթուց աւուրսն անցուցանէին. իբրեւ ՛ի վերայ հասանէին, կենդանւոյն խանձատեալս հրով սպանանէին. վասն երկիւղածութեան աւուրն փափկութեան եւ օրինացն սրբութեան[139]:

11. And others, that had run together into the caves near by to keep the seventh day secretly, being betrayed to Philip were all burnt together, because they scrupled to defend themselves, from regard to the honour of that most solemn day.
6:11 And others, that had run together into caves near by, to keep the sabbath day secretly, being discovered by Philip, were all burnt together, because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day:

Այլ ես` աղաչե՛մ զամենեսեան, որ զգիրսդ յակն արկանիցէք` մի՛ ինչ վասն ազգին խղճիցէք, եւ զվիշտս զայս ամենայն առ սատակման տոհմին համարիցիք, այլ ՛ի խրա՛տ ազգին մերոյ[140]:

12. I beseech therefore those that read this book, that they be not discouraged because of the calamities, but account that these punishments were not for the destruction, but for the chastening of our race.
6:12 Now I beseech those that read this book, that they be not discouraged for these calamities, but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction, but for a chastening of our nation:

Եւ ո՛չ առ բազում ժամանակս ինչ թողուլ զանօրէնս. այլ վաղվաղակի զնշանս իւր եւ զարուեստս իւր յայտնէ[141]:

13. For indeed that those who act impiously be not let alone any long time, but straightway meet with retribution, is a sign of great beneficence.
6:13 For it is a token of his great goodness, when wicked doers are not suffered any long time, but forthwith punished:
6:14
Զի ո՛չ եթէ որպէս առ այլ հեթանոսս երկայնամիտ լինի Աստուած` մինչեւ լցցեն զչա՛փ մեղաց իւրեանց, եւ եկեսցեն հասցեն ՛ի դատաստանս անհնարինս:

14. For in the case of the other nations the Sovereign Lord doth with longsuffering forbear, until that he punish them when they have attained unto the full measure of sins; but not so judged he as touching us,
6:14 For not as with other nations, whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish, till they be come to the fulness of their sins, so dealeth he with us:
6:15
այնպէս եւ առ մե՛ւք կատարէ զամենայն, զի հասցուք մեք ՛ի տեղի դատաստանի:

15. that he may not take vengeance on us afterward, when we be come unto the height of our sins.
6:15 Lest that, being come to the height of sin, afterwards he should take vengeance of us:
6:16
այլ մօտ առ մօ՛տ խրատէ, եւ արագ արա՛գ ածէ ՛ի վերայ զողորմութիւն:

16. Wherefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us; but though he chasteneth with calamity, yet doth he not forsake his own people.
6:16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us: and though he punish with adversity, yet doth he never forsake his people:

Զայս բանս ընդ ձեզ վասն յիշատակի բանիցդ խօսեցաք. արդ անդրէն ՛ի գլո՛ւխ պատմելոյն մատիցուք:

17. Howbeit let this that we have spoken suffice to put in remembrance; but after few words we must come to the narrative.
6:17 But let this that we at spoken be for a warning unto us. And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in a few words:

Եղիազարո՛ս այր մեծ ընդ առաջինսն ՛ի գնդի անդ. լցեա՛լ աւուրբք` ծերացեալ հասակաւ, գեղեցիկ երեսօք. ածեալ գա՛յլ ՛ի բերան ստիպէին ուտել խոզենի:

18. Eleazar, one of the principal scribes, a man already well stricken in years, and of a noble countenance, was compelled to open his mouth to eat swine’s flesh.

Նորա ՛ի մտի՛ եդեալ` յամառեալ պնդեալ սրտիւ` յա՛նձն առ ընդունել զմահ քաջ անուամբ` քան զկեանս խղճիւ, եւ ընկերաց ըստգտանելով: Ընտրեաց ինքնակա՛մ հասանել ՛ի տանջանս. ձեռներէ՛ց լինէր, թքանե՛լ անարգե՛լ զպաշտօնս նոցա[142]:

6:19
19. But he, welcoming death with renown rather than life with pollution, advanced of his own accord to the instrument of torture, but first spat forth
6:19 But he, choosing rather to die gloriously, than to live stained with such an abomination, spit it forth, and came of his own accord to the torment:
6:20
որպէս օրէ՛ն է համբերողաց բացէ ՛ի բա՛ց անարգել ինչ` զոր ո՛չ է օրէն յանձինս մատուցանել[143]:

6:20
20. as men ought to come that are resolute to repel such things as not for the natural love of life is it lawful to taste.
6:20 As it behoved them to come, that are resolute to stand out against such things, as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted:
6:21
Իսկ այն` որ պատրաստեալ եկեալ էին, ինքեանք առ տկարութեան մտացն, վասն անձնասէր բարոյից զոհից ՛ի պաշտօն, ծանօ՛թ եւս էին առնն աւագութեան. առեալ մեկուսի` իւրեա՛նց տկարութեան մտօքն զհաստատեալ միտսն ՛ի հրապո՛յրս ցոփութեան դարձուցանել ջանային: Յա՛նձն առ ասեն զհրաման թագաւորիդ:

6:21
21. But they that had the charge of that forbidden sacrificial feast took the man aside, for the acquaintance which of old times they had with him, and privately besought him to bring flesh of his own providing, such as was befitting for him to use, and to make as if he did eat of the flesh from the sacrifice, as had been commanded by the king;
6:21 But they that had the charge of that wicked feast, for the old acquaintance they had with the man, taking him aside, besought him to bring flesh of his own provision, such as was lawful for him to use, and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king:
6:22
եւ քեզ ա՛յլ միս մատուսցուք զի լուծցես զկարծիսն, եւ ՛ի մահուանէդ ապրեսցի՛ս:

22. that by so doing he might be delivered from death, and for his ancient friendship with them might be treated kindly.
6:22 That in so doing he might be delivered from death, and for the old friendship with them find favour:

Նա գեղեցիկ խորհուրդս հաստատուն յանձին եդեալ, զարժանի հասակին` ըստ ծերութեա՛ն մեծութեանն, ըստ երեւելի՛ վայելչութեանն, ըստ զուարթածաղիկ ալեա՛ցն զուարճացելոց, ըստ գեղեցիկ ՛ի մանկութենէ մինչեւ յաւագո՛յթ սննդեանն. մանաւանդ առաւել ըստ աստուածագործ սրբութեան օրինադի՛ր կրօնից, ամենայն կարգօք լի, արագ արա՛գ առնէր զպատասխանին[144]:

23. But he, having formed a high resolve, and one that became his years, and the dignity of old age, and the gray hairs which he had reached with honour, and his excellent education from a child, or rather the holy laws of God’s ordaining, declared his mind accordingly, bidding them quickly send him unto Hades.
6:23 But he began to consider discreetly, and as became his age, and the excellency of his ancient years, and the honour of his gray head, whereon was come, and his most honest education from a child, or rather the holy law made and given by God: therefore he answered accordingly, and willed them straightways to send him to the grave:
6:24
Ո՛չ արժան` ո՛չ պատշաճ, ասէ` մերոյ չափոյ հասակի` կեղծաւորութի՛ւն մտանել ընդ սրբութեան խոստովանութիւն: Իցեն բազումք ՛ի մանկտւոյ այտի` որ ընդ ակա՛մբ հայիցին. կարծի՛ս ՛ի մտի դնիցեն եւ ասիցեն. Եթէ Եղիազարոս` իննսնամեա՛ն անցեալ ծերութեամբ հասեալ ՛ի դուռն վախճանի, յայլազգութիւն դարձաւ[145]:

24. For it becometh not our years to dissemble, that many of the young should suppose that Eleazar, the man of fourscore years and ten, had gone over unto an alien religion;
6:24 For it becometh not our age, said he, in any wise to dissemble, whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar, being fourscore years old and ten, were now gone to a strange religion:
6:25
Եւ նոքա վասն ի՛մ կեղծաւորեալ գայթագղեսցին. եւ զայս` խի՛ղճ մտաց եւ կե՛ղտ անուն ծերութեանս յաշխարհի թողից:

25. and they, by reason of my dissimulation, and for the sake of this brief and momentary life, should be led astray because of me, and I get to myself a pollution and a stain of mine old age.
6:25 And so they through mine hypocrisy, and desire to live a little time and a moment longer, should be deceived by me, and I get a stain to mine old age, and make it abominable:
6:26
Իսկ արդ` եթէ ամենեւին նո՛յնչափ ժամանակս կենաց շնորհիցեն ինձ, եւ ՛ի ձեռս մարդկան բնաւ այլ ո՛չ մատնիցիմ. սակայն յաւիտենից ՛ի մշտնջենաւոր ձեռա՛ց անտի` ո՛չ կենդանեօք եւ ո՛չ յետ կենդանութեան ուրեք փախչել կարիցեմ[146]:

6:26
26. For even if for the present time I shall remove from me the punishment of men, yet shall I not escape the hands of the Almighty, either living or dead.
6:26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men: yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty, neither alive, nor dead:
6:27
Վասն այսորիկ քաջութեամբ փոխեցայց յաշխարհէ աստի, զի արժանի՛ իմոյ ծերութեանս երեւեցայց:

27. Wherefore, by manfully parting with my life now, I will shew myself worthy of mine old age,
6:27 Wherefore now, manfully changing this life, I will shew myself such an one as mine age requireth:

Եւ օրինակ բարեա՛ց եւ առաքինութեան մանկտւոյ թողից, զի յօժարութեամբ եւ քաջութեամբ ՛ի վերայ սրբութեան օրինացն մահո՛ւ չափ ջանալ մարթասցեն: Զայս ամենայն իբրեւ ասէր` ինքնակամ դիմագրաւ կամակար ՛ի վիշտս մահուն եւ տանջանացն դիմէր[147]:

28. and leave behind a noble ensample to the young to die willingly and nobly a glorious death for the reverend and holy laws. And when he had said these words, he went straightway to the instrument of torture.
6:28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and courageously for the honourable and holy laws. And when he had said these words, immediately he went to the torment:

Նոքա որ յառաջագոյն շո՛ւրջ մատուցեալ մխիթարէին, զբանս մխիթարութեանն ՛ի թշնամութիւն դարձուցանէին, եւ զիմաստութեան խորհուրդսն իբրեւ մոլորութիւն համարէին. առաւե՛լ մատուցեալ ՛ի տանջանս տագնապէին:

29. And when they changed the good will they bare him a little before into ill will, because these words of his were, as they thought, sheer madness,
6:29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred, because the foresaid speeches proceeded, as they thought, from a desperate mind:

Նա իբրեւ մերձ եղեւ ՛ի տանջանաց անտի ՛ի վախճան, եբաց զբերան իւր հեծեծելով, սկսաւ խօսել ՛ի Տէր որ ունի զգիտութիւն սրբութեան խորհրդոց` եւ ասէ. Այս մի ինչ յա՛յտ եղեւ, եթէ ՛ի ձեռս ի՛մ էր արձակել ՛ի մահուս վշտաց. զայս խստութեան տանջանս մարմնոյ ընկալեալ համբերեմ. այլ հոգւով քաջ քաղցրութեամբ վասն ահի սաստիցն Տեառն ընդունիմ[148]:

6:30
30. and when he was at the point to die with the stripes, he groaned aloud and said, To the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, it is manifest that, whereas I might have been delivered from death, I endure sore pains in my body by being scourged; but in soul I gladly suffer these things for my fear of him.
6:30 But when he was ready to die with stripes, he groaned, and said, It is manifest unto the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, that whereas I might have been delivered from death, I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten: but in soul am well content to suffer these things, because I fear him:
6:31
Եւ սա` զայս օրինակ պատերազմեալ` յաշխարհէ փոխեցաւ:

31. So this man also died after this manner, leaving his death for an ensample of nobleness and a memorial of virtue, not only to the young but also to the great body of his nation.
6:31 And thus this man died, leaving his death for an example of a noble courage, and a memorial of virtue, not only unto young men, but unto all his nation:
